Game 2 / Averages & Report

The Great Britain Transplant Cricket Club (GBTCC) held their first ever tour on home soil in June 2005.   The itinerary was to play a 20 /20 game against a Tynemouth Cricket Club select II on Wednesday 1st June, but unfortunately this had to be cancelled because of bad weather.

On behalf of the GBTCC I would like to thank everyone at Tynemouth CC who did so much to allow the fixture to be scheduled into their busy programme.   Also to the groundsman who did his best to let the game go ahead but with just an hour to the start time the rain came down again and rendered the beautiful ground unplayable.

Back Row:  Alistair Hedderwick / Brian Witham / Colin Mitchell / Dave Parker / Steve Jackson / Nigel Mills / Ian Hillier / Andy Knox.

Front Row: Ian Lewis-Jones / Martin Hutchinson / Graham Marsh / Nick Pomone / Derek Johnson.

Percy Main CC II v GBTCC
2nd June 2005 - 45 overs per innings

The groundstaff at the beautiful village ground of Percy Main Cricket Club worked very hard and had prepared an excellent batting strip despite the bad weather earlier in the week.   Our skipper, Colin Mitchell agreed with Ken Moor that we would bat first so once again Dave Parker and I resumed our opening pairing and strode with pride to the wicket.   We were warmly greeted by the players of PMCC.

Dave appeared to be in great nick, he was our leading run scorer in Australia, and hit  two boundaries in the first over so I decided to just try and stay there and give him the strike whenever possible.   After scoring 7 singles I became the first player to be dismissed in the UK for GBTCC, to go with my dubious record in Australia.   We had put on 25 after 5 overs and it was a fairly reasonable start against a very good Percy Main select II.

Alistair Hedderwick was dismissed cheaply for 2 and newcomer Nigel Mills went out to bat with Dave who was batting imperiously.   He was eventually out for 37 and Nigel scored an excellent 26 on his debut.   Unfortunately no other batsman could register double figures and we were all out for 119 in 44.4 overs.

Despite giving me loads of stick following my batting in Oz I promised not to mention that debutant Ian Lewis-Jones was dismissed for 0, so I won't!

Bowling:

Bowler Overs Maidens Runs Wickets

Craig Downie 6 0 40 0
Blyth Duncan (Jnr) 6 1 15 2
jack Patterson 11 1 18 3
Richard McSherry 11.4 3 17 2
Chris Jeffries 5 0 16 4
Steve Knight 4 0 9 0

We would have to bowl extremely well to defend our 119 total which we all agree was probably 20 - 30 short of a challenging score.

I am delighted to report that Ian Lewis-Jones more than made up for his duck, by taking a wicket with his very first delivery representing GBTCC.   Nice one ILJ.

As we suspected we were just a few runs short of a very good total and lost by 2 wickets.

Man of the Match - Dave Parker

Summary:

bullet

Everything about the game apart from the result was very satisfactory.

bullet

The newcomers to the side all contributed and have definitely strengthened the team.

bullet

Nigel Harris is a class batsman and good performer with the ball.

bullet

Brian Witham is the opening bowler we have been looking for.

bullet

Martin Hutchinson, Steve Jackson and Ian Lewis-Jones are all very athletic and can bat and bowl a bit.  Their turn to shine will come.

bullet

The facilities at my home club Percy Main Cricket Club are excellent and everyone was pleasantly surprised at what was available.

bullet

The wicket and outfield were much better than anything we played on in Sydney and the outfield was as good as Adelaide Oval.

bullet

All in all, apart from the result, excellent
