GREAT BRITAIN TRANSPLANT CRICKET CLUB

David Hookes Memorial Trophy Series

 GBTCC v Australia

Monkton Combe CC  - 16th July 2006
1 Day Game - 45 overs per innings

The series, now all square, was in the balance with Australia still slight favourites as the holders.   Whoever went 2-1 up after this game could dictate the pace of the deciding Test match to come.

The weather was again hot and sunny.    The ground was as beautiful as any I had ever seen but the wicket was a different colour to those we had played on in the north east and was decidedly greenish.   The outfield was lush and was bound to be slow.   I wonder if the Aussies had ever played on a wicket like this?

For the second leg of the tour GB have three new faces.   Simon Harris, Ian Lewis-Jones and Mick Anson all made their debuts in this game.

GB won the toss (whoopee) and elected to bat.

Bill Trelease 5 0 27 1
Chris Wills 8 0 48 3
Michael Campbell-Jones 8 0 66 1

We were delighted with this score, considering the state of the wicket and the slow outfield, and were extremely confident of winning as we munched our way through tea.

Colin Mitchell notched his second consecutive fifty (62), debutant Simon Harris scored a methodical but stylish 68.    They were backed up well by Nigel Mills (32) and the returning Alistair Hedderwick (42).   Who caught him?

Chris Wills chipped in with another 3 wickets but the Aussies probably gave away about 40 runs too many.   We reckoned 200 was a competitive total.   239 was a bonus.

Without Chris Wills and his 73 runs the Aussies would have been routed.   As it was they suffered a heavy defeat and GB got their noses in front for the first time in the series.   Alistair bagged three wickets and Simon, Matt and Nigel all chipped in with two each.   Current British transplant golf champion Ian Lewis-Jones took his first (and so far only) international wicket  to dismiss Wulffy with a beauty.   I mention this only because he begged me.   A good team performance backed up by good fielding.

Result:   GBTCC won by 77 runs      Series:   GBTCC 2 - 1 ATCC

Summary:

bullet

For the first time ever the Aussies will have to come from behind if they want to keep the trophy.

bullet

Monkton Combe is one of the six most most beautiful cricket pavilions in England according to a poll conducted by readers of The Times newspaper.........of which I am one.

bullet

The Observer?   The Gruniard?   Huh.

bullet

I will publish some photographs once all the scores are posted for all to see.

bullet

It's just a pity that the wicket and outfield were not of the same standard.

bullet

Then again, when in England and all that.
