GREAT BRITAIN TRANSPLANT CRICKET CLUB

  Transplant Australia David Hookes Memorial

Australia v GBTCC

 Kensington Oval - 7th - 8th October 2004
2 Day Game - 80 overs per day - Max 50 overs per innings
(That's what we agreed before we started)

A chance to redeem ourselves after our poor performances in the previous 1 day games.   We would have to bat much better if we were to be competitive against the freshened up Australian squad who by now were full of confidence.

For the first time in the series Dave Parker was out before me.   I was 4th man out in the 19th over with the score on 52, to what I think was a poor lbw verdict ( I would say that wouldn't I?).   Alistair Hedderwick was keeping things going nicely and was batting with great élan before he was out.   Apart from 10 from our eccentric but excellent 'keeper, Derek Johnson, the tail failed to wag.  Nick West confirmed what a good all round cricketer he is and John Wulff bagged another 3 victims (but not me this time!).   Had we scored enough?

* Andy Knox took the best catch of the series.   He ran fully 30 yards to get to a skier from Mark Cocks and had to push Nick Pomone out of the way before pouching a memorable catch (at least that's what he asked me to write!)

Bowling:

The Aussies innings closed after they had batted for 50 overs.   An excellent knock of 47 no by Mick Hirdman was the foundation for their score.   It was great to see Mark Cocks the CEO of Transplant Australia taking part and batting so well, apparently he is also a good 'pie delivery man' but alas he did not turn his arm over.

It was at this point that rules and playing conditions were being made on the hoof.   The agreed conditions were that each side could bat a maximum of 50 overs and that once 80 overs had been bowled in a day that would be the end of play for that day.

A total of 89 overs had already been bowled, but play was extended to 5pm.    With the light fading fast and only 20 minutes play possible we committed cricketing suicide.   Our captain, Gareth Pollard decided to open the innings with Dave Parker and they went out to bat presumably with the intention of wiping out the first innings deficit of 36 by playing cavalier cricket.

As errors of judgement go this was monumental and, in my opinion, doomed to failure.   Dave  and Gareth were both out playing overly attacking shots in very poor light.   I went out to bat and faced only one delivery before being joined by Colin Mitchell.    We had a quick chat, appealed for bad light which was granted immediately and I went to  bed 0 not out.   The overnight score was 9 - 2, making us 27 in arrears and our two 'big guns' in the hutch.

The captain's decision to bat in poor light last evening looks a poor one today when the sun is beating down and the temperature is 25C.

Personally I felt in great nick and had moved to 15 in relatively quick time and we were now in credit.   Then I stopped on a cover drive and paid the penalty for a 'nothing' shot and was easily caught by Nick Harris.   I may as well have just swung my bat, as others before me had done, as go down like a wombat!

Apart from Ian Hillier who compiled a good 21 no we capitulated in just 27 of our 50 overs and handed the series to Australia on a plate.   If we could have batted our full 50 overs the Aussies would have struggled to pass our total,  just as happened in Game 1 in Adelaide.

Australia - 2nd Innings

Gareth Pollard 13 7 12 1
Andy Knox 3 0 31 0
Alistair Hedderwick 9.3 0 24 1

The two Nick's and Mick all batted with consummate ease again and the total was reached in just 25 overs for the loss of 2.

Australia won by 8 wickets.

Man of the match - Mick Hirdman (Aus)

Umpires: Gordon Smith (Aus) & Bill Dow (Eng)

Scorers: John Wulff / Alistair Hedderwick / Dave Parker

Summary:

bullet

This game was handed to Australia by GBTCC.   Admittedly the Aussies batted and bowled very well, but we batted first and should have controlled the match by using up overs.

bullet

The extraordinary decision to bat for 20 minutes at the end of day 1 in light which required night vision goggles for the spectators, fielders and especially the batsman, was ridiculous.

bullet

A maximum of 71 overs could only be bowled on day 2 and if we had batted for 50 of them I fail to see how the Australians could possibly have won.

bullet

Where was Colin Mitchell when wickets were needed in the Aussie 2nd innings?

bullet

He was fielding at square leg that's where he was.

bullet

Before the start of the innings Colin was our leading wicket taker of the series and most of his wickets had been top order batsmen.

bullet

Young Andy Knox is a fine prospect and can only get better, but he had not been given a bowl since Game 2 in Adelaide.   He opened with Gareth Pollard and unfortunately went for 31 runs in 3 overs of mayhem.

bullet

Game effectively over.

bullet

Well done 'The Wombats!'   They won 3 games and drew 1 to become the first winners of the Transplant Australia David Hookes Memorial Shield.

If the Aussies are reading this I would be obliged with the names of your catchers, likewise ours please Colin / Al.   If you made a catch let me know and I will insert it asap.
