GREAT BRITAIN TRANSPLANT CRICKET CLUB

  Transplant Australia David Hookes Memorial

Australia v GBTCC

Snape Oval - Bondi Junction - 5th October 2004
1 Day Game - 45 overs per innings

This game was scheduled to be played on the beautiful Petersham Oval but for whatever reason the groundsman had flooded the wicket about an hour before we arrived, so play would be impossible here.   What a great pity because this was the wicket on which Sir Donald Bradman, the King of all batsman, had scored his very first 1st class century.   He also took 3 wickets.   I know all of this because there is a plaque in the ground to commemorate this piece of cricketing history.

Murray Rose made some frantic phone calls and we all decamped to Bondi Junction for the second one day game of the series.   It is worth pointing out that Murray had batted 3 times and had yet to be dismissed in the series.

Nick West 7 1 20 2
Dave Elysee 2 0 2 2

What can I say in our defence?   Not a lot really.   Gareth Pollard, Colin Mitchell and Alistair Hedderwick all batted very well but could not keep it going following Dave and I getting out cheaply.   As well as the Aussies bowled we have to put our hands up and say we batted poorly.   We only batted for 30 of our allotted 45 overs.

Despite the best efforts of Gareth Pollard (captain) who bowled magnificently and batted better than most we simply did not have a chance following our batting display.   For the Aussies, new team members Nick West, Mick Hirdman and Greg Furling all looked to be excellent cricketers and shifted the balance of power  to Australia.

Australia won by 5 wickets.

Men of the Match: Nick West (Australia) / Gareth Pollard (GBTCC)

Scorers:   John Wulff / Alistair Hedderwick / Dave Parker

Summary:

bullet

The Australian squad for the Sydney leg of the tour was considerably stronger than in Adelaide and we would have to play extremely well to match them in the 2 day game which comes next.

bullet

Murray rose has still not been dismissed.

bullet

Despite the results we are enjoying the tour immensely and relations with the Australian squad both on and off the pitch are excellent.
