GREAT BRITAIN TRANSPLANT CRICKET CLUB

  Transplant Australia David Hookes Memorial

Australian Tour 2004

Graham Marsh
 Player profile

Born 14th January 1955
Heart transplant - 23rd July 1999
Left handed elegant middle order batsman
Deceptively slow right hand bowler (former wicketkeeper)
Other sports:   Golf - 12 hcp / 100m
Likes:   Rock music / sport / travel / beating Australians at cricket & golf.

I have always wanted to visit Australia.   To play competitive cricket and golf against the Aussies will be a once in a lifetime experience.   I will be accompanied by my wife Christine and we are going to take time out to visit your wonderful country including the Test match grounds in Adelaide / Sydney and Perth whilst in Oz.   I will probably have to visit one or two shops as well, it's only fair.

Colin Mitchell

Born 10th January 1950
Liver transplant - 10th September 1989
Right hand top order batsman
Leg spin bowler - was bowling googlies when Shane Warne was just an embryo.
Other sports: Tennis / 10k walk

Colin is arriving in Oz before the main party, as he is meeting up with his daughters in Adelaide.

Andy Knox

Born 4th September 1971

Kidney transplant - 27th January 1998
He is either right handed or left handed at batting and bowling.
Definitely our secret weapon
Other sports: Tennis / 100m

Ian Hillier

Born 27th March 1966
Kidney transplant  - 26th November 1996
Right hand batsman
Medium pace (sometimes rapid)) bowler
Other sports: Golf - 9hcp

Ian hopes to meet up with friends and relatives while he is down under.   He will be travelling with his girlfriend Ceri and they will definitely be visiting the Barossa Valley and sampling it's produce.   Ian also has a passion for rugby and is very proud of the fact that he is the only Welshman in the squad.
(Not quite Ian - Colin Mitchell's mother was born in the principality) so he is too.

Dave Parker

Born 7th June 1964
Kidney transplant - 30th September 2003
Right hand top order batsman
Very slow bowler (batsman will be asleep before ball arrives)
Specialist slip fielder
Other sports: Golf - 16hcp / bowls (sad really)

Likes - Beer and music and giving the Aussies a good thrashing at any sport (which doesn't happen too often) and then some more beer.
A trip of a lifetime, and is looking forward to seeing friends for a beer (really?) in Sydney.
It will be Dave's 1st anniversary of his transplant when in Adelaide and he intends to celebrate by having a few beers with the boys.

No photo available as he does not wish to scare anyone!   Don't tell him, but if you check out the team photo below he is the right handed batsman.

Doug Choat

Born 14th March 1983
Kidney transplant (third) - 1st January 1997
Right hand batsman
Slip fielder
Other sports:   100m / 200m / Table Tennis

At 21 Doug is one of two young up and coming talented cricketers in our squad.   It is an opportunity that he will thrive on and brings down the average age of the squad dramatically.

Alistair Hedderwick

Kidney transplant - October 2000
Top order batsman
Bowls medium pace and off spin

Alistair is relishing the opportunity to compete against the most motivated sporting country in the world.

Cliff Graham
(On left of picture above)

Unfortunately Cliff is unable to play because of injury, but he is an integral part of our squad. Lucky for the Aussies really as his fastest delivery has been timed at quarter past three!

Derek Johnson

Born 10th March 1936
Liver transplant 6th August 1997
Wicket keeper / lower order batsman
Other sports:   Squash / 100m / 200m / Long Jump

Derek is certainly the senior member of the party but also one of the fittest.   He will be a hard man to beat in his events and will be part of our relay team.

Derek also like highland dancing (och aye he does).  Whilst in Adelaide he hopes to meet up with his brother for the first time in 30 years.

Nick Pomone

Born 1983
Kidney transplant 1993
Fast bowler / middle order batsman
Other sports: tennis / running / badminton.

Nick is the baby of the team and a multi-talented sportsman.
He also plays football, squash and ice hockey.   Nick can't wait to sample the Aussie culture and hospitality and is looking forward to the trip.

Some of the players and supporters pictured outside Birkenhead Cricket Club.
Young Will Dow is pictured (in pads).   He is a very
talented bowler for Birkenhead Cricket Club U15's and put us through our paces in the nets.

Dave Weaver

Born 11th April 1956
Kidney transplant (second) May 1997
We are keeping his details top secret.   We do not want to tell the Aussies everything about our squad.   Some things are better left unsaid!  Is Australia ready for this lad from Liverpool?
Other sports:   Volleyball / Table tennis

As Dave was ill when the World Games were held in Australia he is thrilled at the prospect of being able to play in the first ever transplant cricket series and hopes it will become a regular event. Dave is also passionate about football and rugby, enjoys quizzes and is fond of the amber liquid.

Pictured in the back row, extreme right above, behind Dave Parker.

Gareth Pollard - Captain

Gareth has been so busy playing in the Lancashire leagues that I have not got any details about his dob etc.   I can tell you something about his cricketing prowess.

He is capable of opening the batting and bowling.
Not only that, but he can field to his own bowling at fine leg and catch his return from the boundary over the top of the stumps.   OK so I made some of it up, but Gareth is a fine cricketer and good all round athlete.

Bill Dow - Umpire

It's not that we don't trust our Australian hosts.    Bill is a very experienced umpire and is straining at the leash to get down under.......steady lad, steady.
