Thursday 30th November
DP - Raymond Illingworth and Ashley Metcalfe are obviously the
two 'other' Test cricketers you were looking for.
If in the next 24 hours no-one has answered the Graham Roope question
all will be revealed. Clue: Like me, this left
handed batsman has opened the innings for his country.
Unlike me, he has scored lots of runs.
Are the Aussies aware of the tv programme I'm a Celebrity, Get Me out
of Here! which is about to reach it's climax down under in the next
couple of days? Jason Donovan is still in the jungle camp
and has to be one of the favourites to win. My money is on
Myleene.
The two Geordie boys who present the show, Ant and Dec are lush and very
funny.
OK you have sussed me out. Yes I am just filling in time
before this evening's entertainment begins from Adelaide (00.30 GMT).
 |
Glad to see I have got DP stumped with the Roope question.
|
 |
The Test playing ex Farsley CC players he is looking for I believe are
Stephen Rhodes and Phil Carrick.
|
 |
I, on the other hand, am still looking for Dougie.
|
Wednesday 29th November
 |
Hot off the press - I have just confirmed Alan Fox as my comedian for
Gig 8. The date is 17th March 2007 and tickets will go on
sale on New Year's Day at a tenner each.
|
 |
Alan is a well known Geordie comic from south of the river Tyne, but we
won't hold that against him.
|
 |
The band is Percy and the Back Lanes who play Beatles, Stones, The Kinks
and loads of other classic pop stuff from the 60s up to the present day.
Not too heavy but great to bop along to or simply sit at the back and
mime away.
|
 |
Rosie, two free tickets are yours if you want to come over with a
friend. Judith Burgess and Joan Whitney from the
Freeman team are definitely coming and plan to stay at a guest house in
Tynemouth.
|
 |
Lynne Holt normally comes too.
|
 |
Any GBTCC players and WAGS want to come? Let me know.
|
 |
This year I am donating all of the profit to Heart Research.
|
Having said that I would not mention cricket until Friday(ish) please
indulge me in the following.
Graham Roope, ex Surrey and England batsman, sadly died at the weekend
at the relatively young age of 60. I shall remember Graham
Roope forever as he was the non striking batsman at Headingley in 1977
when Sir Geoffrey Boycott scored his hundredth career hundred.
That it was in a Test Match against the Australians with an opening
bowling attack of Lillee and Thompson made it even more memorable.
Being in the crowd that sunny day on the Western Terrace (not so wild in
those days) was definitely the sporting highlight of my pre transplant
life.
Reading Graham Roope's obituary in the newspaper I came across something
unusual and wonder if anyone knows the answer. In that same
cricket season of 1977, Roope was again the non striking batsman when
another player scored his hundredth career hundred. Who was
that player?
My apologies if I have asked this question before, but it is good you
would have to admit.
 |
Playing golf this morning I got off to a dream start of birdie, birdie
which is definitely a first for me.
|
 |
Sadly things could only get worse and they did.
|
Incidentally, my basin is still cracked and am still waiting for Dougie
the plumber to call.
Tuesday 28th November
Second post: I wouldn't normally prattle on about my
hospital visit in the blog as I cover the minutiae in My Red Book
section of the site. However be prepared to be prattled.
My weight was good at 71 Kg, or a kipper's eyelash over 11 stones in
English / Irish. Temperature was OK at 35.8°C,
or 97°F near enough. It was my blood pressure that was a bit
OTT. At 8am it was 147 /100 which can sometimes be the case
after driving to hospital then giving blood samples and generally
running around. So it had to be checked again later in
consultation with my cardiologist.
My turn came at 11am and I was feeling perfectly
normal, relaxed and not agitated at all. 140 /100 was the
reading. Oh dear!
My blood pressure tablet, lisinopril has been
increased from 5mg to 10mg as a result and we await developments.
I used to take 10mg but a side effect of this dosage was dizziness.
If Vic is reading this I hope he realises he will have to pick the ball
out of the hole for me when we play golf tomorrow, assuming it ever
drops into the far too small orifice in the first place.
 |
I wonder how Rosie, the B- patient got on at her
hospital appointment in Dublin's fair city.
|
 |
I can recommend a visit to her blog, which she kindly
always leaves a link to whenever leaving a message in my Guest Book.
|
 |
It will make you realise just how old we have all
become.
|
 |
How does she know all the answers to the pop
questions?
|
Not one mention about cricket. Hey Anita,
what is an RSL?
Gone to hospital for a 'review' before the milkman has made his
delivery.
 |
If you are a member of the TOGS may I suggest you check the league
table.
|
Monday 27th November
Second post: I was tucked up in bed by 1.45am following the
denouement of the cricket. What a shambles. I
still reckon Monty Panesar, our best spinner and Chris Read, our best
wicket keeper should have played even though they would not have
affected the outcome as a result of Steve Harmison firing blanks.
The Adelaide Oval is the venue for the next Test starting Friday and as
we all know the last English team to play there (GBTCC) against the
Aussies (ATCC) were denied victory only by strange captaincy decisions.
With a bit luck Freddie Flintoff will not bowl uninterrupted from the
city end all day every day before going in and trying to slog the
bowlers for six at every opportunity and we can claim a victory.
He did try it this English summer though, remember?
Unless the big Geordie fast bowler can find a rhythm and land it on the
cut strip our chances will be slim.
 |
I promise not to talk about cricket again until Friday(ish).
|
It was strange looking at the pictures sent to me by my big sis from BC,
Canada. She and her nutty mates were to be seen entering a
fast flowing river in white out conditions and yet here I am am watching
English bowlers toil in the heat of Oz. Whoops sorry, I
mentioned cricket again. Great pics sis. Would
the Aussies like to see what snow looks like? I can publish
one for you tomorrow.
Early post: It is my intention to stay up again until
2am (lunch time in Oz) and watch some cricket. Without
sounding too pessimistic, I reckon it could be all over before then.
Sunday 26th November
 |
Is the fictitious Chinaman left handed I wonder?
|
 |
I agree with No 23 - The 'doosra' is a throw that Jeff Capes would
be proud of.
|
 |
What we need are umpires who will stand up to those players who break /
flout the laws of the game.
|
 |
What happens? We sack them.
|
 |
One Geordie performed somewhere near what is required in the Test Match.
If we can get them both firing next week in Adelaide we may have a
chance.
|
Having returned from the psychiatrist's couch followed by a debrief by
the man from Bude I shall be updating The TOGS league table without the
aid of a safety net. Once this mission has been accomplished
I shall seek counselling later this afternoon before sending off my
application form to the 'Earth is Flat Club'.
it is often said that the camel came into being as a result of a
committee meeting to create the perfect horse. The duck
billed platypus and the TOGS scoring system were the second and third
projects of the same committee.
(nearly) Saturday 25th November
It is now.....
 |
Well done Colin. The googly or 'Bozie' as Australians
refer to it was named after Reginald (the newsreader) Bosanquet's, dad
who first developed said delivery. Dear old Reggie, we don't
get newsreader's (hic) like that any more. The current
trend is for newsreaders, or newscasters as they are now called, to
wander around the studio informing us of the day's events.
Good old Reggie could hardly speak never mind stand up and walk around.
|
Playing golf today I was privileged to be playing alongside Doug Walker,
who will not mind me saying is 70 years old. The par
three third hole into a breeze is never easy but Doug needed only one
shot today. His shot with a utility club sailed arrow like
pinwards but was obscured from our vision by a tree. We
arrived at the verdant virgin putting surface and checked the hole (as
you do). There it was, snuggled in the cup waiting for it's
master.
Fanatstic shot Doug. It is Doug's third hole in one and was the
first that I had witnessed. Great stuff.
Cricket? What cricket!
 |
I won't be staying up too long 'cos it's TOGS golf in the morning and
the wind is forecast. Some mental preparation required and
watching England struggle to avoid an innings defeat is not an ideal way
to prepare. We will see how good KP is now.
|
 |
Mrs Boggy and I shall be attending a bit of a do in the evening to
celebrate Norma's 60th birthday. Just thought I should let
you know.
|
Friday 24th November
Yes, I did stay up until 2am again and things did not improve any.
I am worried that if slogger Pieterson can spin the ball so much what
will happen when Shane Warne comes on to bowl?
A terrible injustice has occurred in Brisbane at The Gabba.
Here's me thinking the Aussies were good sports and all that and what
happens? The heavy handed Queensland constabulary have
ejected the one Englishman who is performing to his full potential.
I refer of course to Bill Cooper, an accomplished musician who follows
the England cricket (and football) team and provides witty
accompaniments to the play on his trumpet. The long arm of
the law take a different view in Brisbane and have served Bill with a
'Notice to Move on Direction for bad behaviour'.
These over fussy plods need to get a life. Have they not
noticed a load of drunks, English and Australian, in other parts of the
ground singing inane ditties hour after hour? At
least the trumpet player has got talent.
I reckon it is an Aussie ploy to inflict more Jimmy Little music on us.
If someone can run it by me why Monty isn't playing here because he is
not the world's greatest batsman I would appreciate it.
Remember the great Bishen Bedi in his patka bowling for India or come to
think of it Glen McGrath for Australia in this Test.
If the top order cannot muster enough runs to justify the selection of
England's best left arm spinner since Derek Underwood coming in to bat
at number 11, change the batsmen.
Question (hypothetical of course) - If Monty was an Australian would he
have played?
 |
It's good to see that the Irish are taking an interest in the cricket,
even if they are supporting the wrong team. Can't say I
blame you Rosie.
|
 |
Is anyone in Canada taking a blind bit of notice of the cricket?
Or is all this stuff just the ramblings of a sad Geordie 'sports nut'?
|
 |
It's similar to baseball really. The only difference is that
the stumps are visible in cricket as opposed to an imaginary set in mid
air that the batter tries to defend.
|
 |
The art of bowling and pitching can also be compared. Slower
ball / fast ball, curve ball / out swing / in swing etc.
|
 |
Googlies, Bozies, zooters and Chinamen.........where do I start?
|
Good question - Which ex newsreader's dad gave his name to a
cricketing delivery?
(Nearly) Thursday 23rd November
It is now :
I managed to stay awake until lunch (2am UK) before departing for my pit
fearing the worst. Speaking of worst. Have you
ever seen a worse delivery in Test match cricket by an opening bowler?
Big Geordie Steve Harmison must do better than this or we will be wiped
out in The Ashes. 346 for 4 after the first day's play is
the harbinger of doom.
We have the next Test at The Adelaide Oval to look forward to and the
last GB team to play there came away with a 'winning draw' having
spurned victory by poor captaincy.
 |
I struggled out of bed to be at the dental hospital in Newcastle for 9am
for a bevy of young ladies to peer into the Marsh mouth and come up with
a diagnosis.
|
 |
Result - I have to return in a fortnight for surgery.
|
 |
I returned home, had a game of golf and lost that.
|
 |
As if the cricket wasn't bad enough.
|
There are 30 minutes to go before The Ashes series gets under way,
starting at The Gabba, Brisbane and Australia have won the toss and are
about to go in to bat.
Oh dear.......! If Steve Harmison cannot rip a
couple out before the lunch break I fear the worst. I
understand that Ashley Giles is playing and Monty Panesar is
not..........oh dear, oh dear!!
Giles is good, but Monty is the future and I reckon we are sending out
the wrong signal before a ball is bowled.
I would like to say England will win the match and the series.
As I said, I would like to say England will win the match and the
series.
If England can keep the Aussies to under 300 and take 5 or 6 wickets
that would be a good day.
I would like to say England will win the match and the series.
Come on the big Geordie fast bowler.
Wednesday 22nd November
Before I leave for a game of golf, can anyone remember this day in 1963?
I can. It was the day that President John F Kennedy was
assassinated. Without looking it up on the internet or
checking a diary, here is my question.......What day of the week was it?
Here is a 'clue' - I was returning home from cubs that day and a bus
driver told me the news.
I shall be back later and probably mention a game that begins in 15
hours or so.
 |
Yep....It was a Friday in the UK and USA, Saturday in Oz, this day in
1963 when JFK was shot. I was a 'sixer' in the red and
greens returning home when the bus driver told me.
|
 |
7½ hours to go, but who's counting?
|
Tuesday 21st November
Corned beef and tatie pie in darkest British Columbia reminds me of the
day the Aussies came to Percy Main this summer and had their supper in
the cricket club watching the World Cup Final . They feasted
on pie and mushy peas.
I reckon a drop of albatross pie in the morning would make anyone wake
up in a cold sweat. Go back to the cornflakes Anita.
 |
The tape has arrived in Canada so Jeff's down under should be close.
|
Just a day to go before I become a creature of the night.
The cricket is live at midnight tomorrow form the Gabba and there is
every possibility, if the Aussies bat first, that I will stay up all
through the night watching the big Geordie from Ashington make the
Aussies duck and dive.
Do young females in Ireland watch cricket in the early hours, I wonder?
Do exiled Geordies in Canada watch cricket, I wonder?
If not, my blog will have to contain stuff other than leather on willow
talk these next few weeks.
Monday 20th November
 |
Just back from FHLTA meeting and checked my Emails to find one from
Virgin Radio with the official photograph of Mrs Boggy and me with Tony
Blair.
|
 |
If you voted on-line for GM & The PM you should receive the same
photograph.
|
 |
If not, shame on you.
|
Before I leave for a meeting of the Freeman Heart & Lung Transplant
Association I thought I should pose this difficult Ashes cricket
question that i have just read in my morning newspaper.
Q: There have been only 8 hat tricks in Ashes
history. 5 were taken at the MCG, 2 at the SCG.
Where, when and by whom was the only hat trick taken in England?
My apologies to big sis and Rosie and anyone else who might not even
know what the SCG is.
 |
Did the tape(s) arrive yet?
|
Sunday 19th November
Feet up, slippers on and newspapers to devour.
The build up for The Ashes has started big time and it all gets under
way later this week. I will be up into the small hours
watching the first critical session(s) live. If England bowl
and Steve Harmison is fully fit I hope the Aussies can back up all of
the talk. If the big Geordie fast bowler is not quite right,
I fear the worst.
 |
If you requested a tape of the me on the radio with Tony Blair the PM,
it should have arrived by now or at least be very close.
|
 |
News of the World Transplant Games in Bangkok next year....
.........they go ahead as originally planned Aug / Sept 2007.
|
 |
Does anyone have a suggestion where Mrs Boggy and I can go for ten days
or so following the Games? We are thinking USA, because in
2008 and 2009, all being well, we shall be returning down under again
for the Oz Games / cricket and WTG respectively
|
Saturday 18th November
I was thinking of going pot-holing today but could not find my tin hat
with the torch on top, so have decided to play golf with The TOGS
instead.
Friday 17th November
The Rt Hon Tony Blair MP, The Prime Minister provided the tea and
biscuits for Christine and I at his home in Sedgefield this
morning. Oh, and he gave me a cheque for £20,000 as well.
We arrived at Mr Blair's house at around 8am this morning and were given
the once over by the armed police guarding the Prime Minister's
constituency home. We were taken into the house with the
official photographer and the Government's news network man some twenty
minutes later and chatted waiting for the PM to come.
At exactly 8.30am Mr Blair breezed in with a smile on his face and as I
was sitting drinking a cuppa he shook hands with the two officials first
then turned to me. "Good morning Graham" he said, "Good
morning Tony, may I introduce you to Mrs Boggy".
Just kidding, I introduced my nearest and dearest as Christine.
And yes, I did call him Tony.
I told him how I already felt as if I knew him and he said he felt the
same with me. We chatted and joked quite naturally for
ten minutes or so before he presented me with the cheque for £20,000
which we had won between us on the Virgin Radio Breakfast Show.
I had told him about the World Transplant Games, my golf and of course
the David Hookes Memorial cricket series we play against The Aussies.
He was genuinely interested. I also explained to him how I was
going to divide the money between the FHLTA and Tyne Youth & Community
Centre once I had taken out £3,000 to cover my costs for transplant
sports in 2007. Each charity will receive £8,500 each.
The PM said that was good news for both and was pleased to have helped.
He asked Christine if she travelled with me to the various sports and
asked how long we would be in Bangkok. I looked at the
cheque and said to Mrs Boggy, "How long have you got dear"?
We posed for the official photographs and chatted some more before he
was whisked away for a speech he was giving to a bunch of business men
at Hardwick Hall, not too far away.
The Premier's house had the feel of an upmarket independent country
hotel and is where he entertained George W Bush a few year's back as
well as many other dignitaries and VIP's.
You could say, "I was just happy to there"!
Politics aside, It was very sporting of Mr Blair to have taken part in
the competition and I am grateful that he did. He
certainly didn't have to. As we say in Geordieland, He is
a canny bloke.
I had been told not to publicise the meeting in advance because of
security issues which explains my cloak and dagger blogs these past ten
days or so. Full marks to Inspector Fitzgerald in Ireland
for working it out.
For those of you who may want to listen to a bit more of my interviews
with Tony Blair, I have found this link which should help.
The Sun online.
I did not wish the PM good luck at the next General Election as per the
article. What I said was, "I wish you good luck whatever
happens".
Very early post:
GM meets ?? at 8.30am. Come back later and all will be
revealed.
 |
Guest Book - My apologies once again if you saw the dodgy message in my
Guest Book. As a precaution, if someone that we have never
heard of leaves a (homepage) link, do not attempt to open it.
It will be deleted as soon as I see it.
|
 |
The only (homepage) links that appear in my Guest Book are those that I
am happy to have. Eg. Rosie's homepage,
North Knight's homepage etc....
|
Now then, where did I put the shoe polish?
Thursday 16th November
Due to circumstances beyond my control I shall not be attending my
Healthy Hearts session at the gym tomorrow morning. Not
wanting to miss out on another workout I have even turned down a game of
golf with my strange French speaking acquaintance and will go this
morning instead.
The reason for this weird behaviour will be revealed tomorrow.
Early post:
Watching the England cricketers arrive at Adelaide airport before they
play their final warm up match against South Australia at the Adelaide
Oval brings back some fantastic memories for me from the GBTCC trip down
under in 2004.
Marsh
caught Rose bowled Wulff
5.........for example.
I thought I had scored 9, DP reckoned it was 2, so having checked the
scorecard it turns out I only amassed 5 runs.
Wednesday 15th November
Second post:
Late last night I was interviewed live on W Radio in Colombia, which is
owned by Prisa Media of Spain. The station is broadcast as
Hispanic Radio Network, Diaro El Pais, Canal Plus, CNN Spain and XEW
Mexico which I am assured by the producers has a total audience of 200
million listeners.
They got wind of the story with Tony, sorry, the Prime Minister and
wanted to speak to me about the experience. I could hear the
broadcast down the telephone line in Spanish and some other language
before a translator put the question to me in English and replied
on my behalf.
The translator wanted to know what part of Scotland I was from as he
could detect an accent. Poor bloke wasn't prepared for me I
guess. Anyway, the whole piece lasted about 15 minutes and I
am awaiting news of a world tour to South America. Ho Ho.
 |
The story rumbles on and sometime later this week I shall be involved in
another exciting event which I will tell you about in Friday's second
post. It will be worth
reading.......honestly!
|
 |
Needless to say I won't be going to my Healthy Hearts class at the the
gym.
|
Boggy the Bookie is giving odds of 1/2 on an Australian victory in the
forthcoming Ashes series, no better than 4/1 on England retaining the
urn and 3/1 on the series ending in a draw.
Hot of the press in England is that Ed Joyce is to replace the
unfortunate Marcus Trescothick and that Alistair Cooke will open with
Andrew Strauss. If I was an England selector my choice would have
been Mark Ramprakash who averaged over 100 in the English season just
ended. Then again, what do I know. I fear the
worst but will be hoping for the best.
Playing golf soon if the weather holds then I will be back with how I
broadcast to 200,000,000 people last night live on radio.......honestly!
Tuesday 14th November
Having spent the early part of the day reading the obituary column about
a horse I noticed that the next great white equine hope is none other
than Detroit City.
This is the magnificent beast that I brought to your attention two years
ago before it had won a race. Acting on information received
from the inside track my fellow TOGS and I wagered a tidy sum from our
collective purses only for the stupid steed to have a bit of a 'mare'.
In fairness, since that abysmal failure, Detroit City is unbeaten and
kept winning last season at odds of 7/2. I fear we may not
see those odds again but it was fun whilst it lasted.
 |
The old rockers from Procul Harum are currently appearing live (I think)
in court 56 arguing the toss about who was responsible for the melody,
at least the modified version originally penned by some bloke called J.
S. Bach anyway.
|
 |
The Judge who is 61 years old, which is more or less the same age as the
band, when asked by the QC defending the organist if he was familiar
with the music of Procul Harum and Whiter Shade of Pale replied,
"I am of that age, yes". Great stuff.
|
 |
For those of you who requested a copy of the GM & PM tape in it's
entirety, I posted them yesterday. You too sis.
|
Monday 13th November
Jeff's question has slipped down on to the next page of my Guest Book so
I had better provide the answer or else folk will be wondering what I am
blogging on about.
Under Milkwood by Dylan Thomas and narrated by Richard Burton is the
answer Jeff was seeking. My reference to 'buggerall' the
other day was not me using profanities but....why don't you look it up
for yourself dear reader.
A bit later - I tried entering 'buggerall' into Google and it
came up as a profanity. Try putting it in backwards and see
what happens.
Where were all of my Welsh readers when I needed them?
Sunday 12th November
 |
Last post:
|
 |
On Jeff's behalf I managed to extract a Christian name to his question.
Well done my to my opening partner DP (spelling excepted).
Now then, if I could think of the disciple who doubted JC in the Bible I
reckon we'll have sorted the author out.
|
 |
As for the other Welshman? He was very good on the
War of the Worlds album too.
|
 |
I am sure once Rosie has logged on later this evening the riddle will be
solved.
|
Most of my UK readers will be devouring the Sunday newspapers, out
and about queuing to buy flat pack furniture from the big blue and
yellow tin box from Sweden or waiting to be seen in their local casualty
department after attempting DYI (I can't even get that right) and
whacking their thumb with a hammer.
Quick question - What was the name of the rabbit in The Magic
Roundabout?
Tonight Mrs Boggy and I shall be attending a performance by the
excellent 'Sing Live' choir at
The
Sage on the banks of the Tyne, Gateshead.
Possibly not as grand as the Sydney Opera House but glorious
nonetheless. Take a look at the magnificent Millennium
Bridge too if you use the above link.
Saturday 11th November
 |
1967 sis. I wasn't quite a teenager then.
Tottenham Hotspur did beat Chelsea to win the FA Cup though in the first
ever final contested between two London teams. My
boyhood hero did not score that day but he more than made up for it.
Who? Jimmy Greaves of course.
|
The wind is blowing at around 50 - 60 mph here in Costa del Tynemouth
but it won't prevent me teeing off in a winter medal with my fellow
TOGS.
 |
Good luck to the Freeman volleyball team down in Cambridge this weekend.
|
 |
Just in case we don't get a chance to pause for a minute at 11am I shall
be wearing my red poppy with pride.
|
Friday 10th November
 |
Others can supply the answer to Jeff's question (Guest Book) I reckon.
I have buggerall to say on the subject.
|
 |
Rosie answered my question below far too easily for my liking.
|
Remember the Procul Harum song, Whiter Shade of Pale?
I imagine most of my readers, except Rosie (too young), could quote some
of the lyrics without thinking.
It seems that Matthew Fisher, the organist on the single that sold over
10,000,000 copies, is demanding a share of the royalties, claiming
he substantially rewrote the melody from the original Bach ditty.
Whether he is right or wrong is not the reason for me telling you this.
It gives me the opportunity to ask a pop music question, which is:
In 1977 Whiter Shade of Pale was named as the best pop single of
the last 25 years at the British Rock and Pop Awards. It
shared the honour with which other record?
 |
I bought Clapton's latest album, The Road to Escondido and as per
usual I am really disappointed.
|
 |
This is normally a good sign because after a few listens it will get
better.
|
 |
With less than two weeks to go England have nicely lulled the
Australians into thinking that they will not be up to the task when The
Ashes begin at The Gabba.
|
Thursday 9th November
This morning's post arrived with a CD from Virgin Radio with all the
bits of my chat with PM Tony Blair.
It contains the original message to the station by The Prime Minister on
my behalf, me chatting with DJ Christian O'Connell live on the Breakfast
Show and then the unbelievable part where The PM calls the station live
and Christian, him and I chatting.
There is more.....
It also has the result as it happened and another chat with me speaking
to Christian again. This is all topped off with a
compilation of some of the celebs who called in over the three weeks.
Finally, there is a short interview with my mate Tony which was played
on all of Virgin's news bulletins where he thanked everyone and
congratulated me.
How neat is that?
If any of you would like a copy of the CD I will gladly copy and send it
to you, no matter where in the world you may be. If you are
a fellow transplant recipient and would like to use it in any
fundraising or awareness campaigns that you may be involved with, feel
free.
Obviously I will need your full postal address so drop me an Email.
Go to my Information / contact page if you need it.
 |
I had an Email from Graham Lentell,
North's Knights
president in Rockhampton, Queensland Australia this morning.
|
 |
Graham is my Australian equivalent in that he is a dashing, free
flowing, high scoring, what's a dead bat? opening batsman for his
country (OK we both have the same Christian name).
|
 |
He informed me that he invested a lot of money on a horse which competed
in The Melbourne Cup recently by the name of Geordieland.
|
 |
Apparently it is still running.
|
 |
The British Surfing Championships were cancelled again due to the lack
of waves at Tynemouth Long Sands but have been rescheduled for the
weekend of November 18th & 19th..........honestly Chris.
|
Wednesday 8th November
The Emails, messages and hits keep piling in which is good.
All being well and if the weather is good in the morning I am going to
get some fresh air and have a game of golf with the boys at Tynemouth.
In the evening I have the AGM of Tyne Youth & Community Centre.
Did you know I was chairman? I guess you do now.
It will be my duty to have to inform those gathered that I will soon
have a cheque for £8,500 to give them.
"I will be just happy to be there"!
 |
I have received hundreds of well done messages, some of which you can
read in my Guest Book and others came privately or by Email, for which I
humbly thank you.
|
 |
One message was from Jacqui Mansell who had a heart and lung transplant
at Papworth Hospital in 1999, the same year as my transplant.
|
 |
She told me that her and I share something else in common and I am
delighted to be able to inform the world that.......
.............."Jacqui and I are just happy to be here"!
|
Today is also very important to me because Eric Clapton's latest
album is released and on sale. I received an Email from old
Slowhand himself along with thousands of other dedicated
fans worldwide.
It is a collaboration with JJ Cale and the title is "The Road to
Escondido". You read it here first.
Tuesday 7th November
Speaking at The Daily Mirror Award's last night Mr Blair, The PM,
exclusively told Virgin Radio news that he thought "The public had voted
for Graham......". Thanks Tony.
If you haven't heard any of this stuff and still think Virgin is just an
airline or a brand of mobile phone, use the link above and visit DJ
Christian O'Connell's page. The list of 153 celebrities who
called his show are posted on the site and you can listen to their
message(s).
Go to the picture of Premier Tony Blair and you can hear some of our
chat.
There is also a podcast of the highlights which is available for
download (whatever that means). If you know your mouse from
your ashtray it should be simple.
Virgin Radio have also posted links to the websites of No 10 Downing St,
The Organ Donor Card register, The World Transplant Games, and my two
nominated charities which are Tyne Youth & Community Centre and the
Freeman Heart & Lung Transplant Association as well as this website you
are currently reading. Thanks for that Roque (he is the
producer)
 |
If my computer guru Mick reads this I could do with him getting in touch
because Virgin Radio are going to send a cd of the whole thing with me
and Tony Blair and I would like to download it to my website so everyone
can listen.
|
 |
Sorry about all of the name dropping.
|
 |
OK, so I Iied.

Monday 6th November
Last post:
Unbelievable day! It is 9.20 in the evening and I am closing
down my computer so that I can have a rest. I have
tried to reply to all who have sent personal messages, if I missed you
please accept my apologies. Since 8.30am my site has
received 2335 hits and it is definitely starting to creak.
Thank you for voting for me and Tony Blair - The Prime Minister
on today's Who's calling Christian Show on
Virgin Radio
This is not in any way political
The Prime Minister is supporting me and my two nominated charities:
Tyne Youth &
Community Centre
The Freeman Heart &
Lung Transplant Association
After I take out my estimated costs for next year's transplant sports
events which include, among others, The World Transplant Games in
Bangkok, Thailand, I will donate my winnings equally between my
two chosen charities.
The Prime Minister, or should I just call him Tony? has kindly pledged
his £10,000 for calling Christian O'Connell to my charities too.
Check out 10
Downing Street's website...I am on it.
The whole point of this exercise was to raise awareness and encourage
people to
register for and carry an organ donor card. I hope
this has helped in some small way.
Early post (and I mean early):
Do you think I can get to sleep? No chance. The
good wishes and Emails keep pouring in, votes too I hope.
Big thank you again to everyone especially Carol Ang and all at
the ATCC in Australia. I had a message from John Soldan
saying he was on the case too.
Susan at CHUF, thanks, and yes I will put a team in the golf at Ramside
in 2007. For anyone wondering what CHUF is, it stands for
Children's Heart Unit at the Freeman. Yet another wonderful
charity dong amazing work up here in Geordieland.
Fingers crossed everyone.
Sunday 5th November
 |
On any normal day I would be on here gloating about GB thrashing the
Aussies at rugby 23 -12 down under, but I promise not to mention it.
|
I am truly grateful and feeling slightly humble as messages pour in from
all over the world pledging their support for me and Tone, AKA The Prime
Minister.
Thank you does not cover it, but what else can I say to everyone?
I have got Rosie on the case in The Republic of Ireland, Janet and the
Belfast squad in the north, 'Fish' getting all of my team-mates on the
GB Team and loads of others, The Hamsters from Harefield, and lots of
individuals as per the transgames site, Kaylee's mam Carol (who knows
everyone), The TOGS, Jeff and the Aussies down under (which is why I
didn't mention the rugby), Sheila in Perth WA and all Jonno's mates at
Uni, Dave Clarke (I hope there's more than five of them).
Bro in law Mark and his squad, Marie and the girls, wor Julie and
friends, my two 'current buns' Lee and Kev and all of their mates, The
Cultured Caledonian and of course Mrs Boggy and the girls from the
countries' favourite purveyor of knickers.
Big sis Kathryn, Lyndsey, Ryan, Steven, Hannah and Alan out in
Vancouver, BC and possibly a few others.
if I have missed you from the list my apologies and thanks are offered.
Lots of people who would like our Prime Minister to retire as of
yesterday have even voted for him on this occasion. To them
especially, I hope you sleep well tonight and thanks, I know how much it
troubled you.
I am led to believe that there is a squad at Number 10 Downing Street
beavering away trying to secure votes for our leader and the happy staff
at Mr Blair's constituency office in Sedgefield have received one or two
pledges too.
 |
None of the above means that Tony and I have won and nor are we taking
victory for granted.
|
 |
All of the other celebrities are trying to win the cash for equally
deserving charities and are mobilising their vote too.
|
 |
You can still
Vote here before 7am tomorrow morning and the result is live on
Virgin Radio between 7.30 and 8am.
|
 |
Listen to the interview to satisfy yourself that this is nothing to do
with politics and then Vote for Tony Blair..... and of course, me.
|
I have to admit to being extremely nervous but excited too and would
like to say this:
Even if GM & PM don't win the competition it is mission accomplished for
me. The publicity has been wonderful and if only a handful
of people have signed up to the organ donor register as a result of my
little wheeze I consider that victory enough. I would also
like to add:
"I am just happy to be here!"
Don't forget, wherever you are you can hear the
result live on Virgin Radio (1215mw) at about 8am GB Time.
Saturday 4th November
I attended a meeting of the BHLTA - the British Heart & Lung Transplant
Association - yes I'm on that committee too, which I had organised
at a hotel next to Newcastle airport. The European Heart &
Lung Transplant Games are organised under the umbrella of the BHLTA so
after the Freeman hospital and Tyne Youth & Community Centre it is very
important to me.
Needless to say I missed my game of golf with The TOGS.
Friday 3rd November
I can reveal all now, except that my telephone keeps ringing with
newspapers and news agencies wanting to know all about what happened
this morning on Virgin Radio's Christian O'Connell breakfast show.
I was on live with The Rt Hon Tony Blair MP who is probably better known
as The Prime Minister of The UK.
When I get more time I will give you a blow by blow account of what
happened, meanwhile go to
www.virginradio.co.uk and cast your vote on Who's calling
Christian? Vote for that nice Mr Blair please.
If he wins the vote he is going to donate the £10,000 prize on offer to
my chosen charities, namely the Freeman Heart & Lung Transplant
Association and of course Tyne Youth & Community Centre of which I am
chairman.
I will also receive £10,000 and have said I will give my money, less
approx £3,000 which will cover all of my expenses for next year's
transplant sport including Five Nations Golf in Ireland, GBTCC cricket,
British Transplant Games in Edinburgh and the World Transplant Games in
Bangkok, Thailand, to The FHLTA and Tyne Youth & Community Centre.
You missed it? I think if you log on to the link above you
can hear me and 'Wor Tone' on the radio.
Meanwhile, get voting, please......Thanks.
Top secret: News Flash
Wherever you may be in the world, northern or southern hemisphere, tune
in to the Christian O'Connell breakfast show on Virgin Radio (1215mw)
Friday morning between 6am and 10am and you will be in for a big
surprise. I do mean big!
I cannot tell you any more than that because it is top
secret...honestly. I reckon a good time to plug your ears
back would be between 7 and 9am but as it's live radio things could
change.
I shall be skipping my 'Healthy Hearts' session at the gym tomorrow to
catch up on some sleep because I won't get much kip tonight.
Thursday 2nd November
First post: All of my readers down under should be
celebrating some time today in the sunshine as Australian icon Rolf
Harris will be on bended knee at Buck House today as he receives his
CBE. Unfortunately Mrs Windsor has cancelled her engagements
because of a bad back and HRH Princess Anne will be doing the honours,
literally, for RH.
Well done Rolf, although I don't have one of his originals hanging over
the Boggy mantelpiece I am constantly reminded of his work every time I
enter my garage after spilling some paint on the floor some years back.
Just kidding Rolfy. Also, his version of 'Stairway to
Heaven' is definitely the second best ever recorded.
 |
25 days to go eh? That's the same number of wickets that #23
took in this year's David Hookes Memorial Shield series and probably the
same number that big Geordie fast bowler Steve Harmison will take
before the end of the Ashes series.
|
 |
It's also more than Glen McGrath will score with the bat in the entire
series.
|
 |
Not wanting to be too pedantic but I think you might find that there are
only 21 days to go before play is called at The Gabba.
|
 |
I only know this because in The Times today it informs me that Alan
Knott took 21 catches in the Ashes winning 1970 -71 tour by England.
He also claimed 3 stumpings making his 24 dismissals an English record
for the series.
|
 |
If I remember correctly 'Sir' Geoffrey scored a boat load of runs in
that particular 6 match series (one match was abandoned without a ball
being bowled).
|
 |
Approx 657 at an average of around 90+. Not bad for a
slowcoach.
|
 |
I'm excited too Chris.

Wednesday 1st November
As Captain Haddock might say, "Nincompoop!, Numbskull! and Dogs!
Yep, I got my Tintin and Rin Tin Tin muxed ip badly, but you knew what I
meant I reckon. That walking encyclopaedia from down under,
JS the QC, spotted it straight away to keep Rosie on the straight and
narrow.
I'm not sure if she is deserving of two free 'Gig 8' tickets yet, as I
am not totally convinced that the full connection has been made between
you know who and whatsisname? What do you think?
That reminds me what's a diphthong and more to the point where is it?
 |
If this is your first visit to my site and you were expecting to read
about heart transplants, sport and stuff, a good starting point for you
would be 'Transplant Links and Sites', which you will find on the link
bar to the left.
|
 |
Do please come back again and join in the fun, we shall be discussing
Calculus very soon.
|
 |
I played golf this morning and it must have been just above freezing.
Winter has hit Geordieland. What's the temperature down
under guys?
|
 |
What's it like in Vancouver sis?
|
 |
If the person from Finland who reads my stuff every other day would like
to enlighten us it would be nice to compare. You probably
think 0°C is tee shirt weather.
|
 |
Sorry Rosie, nearly forgot you. What's it
like in the Republic?
