| MCJ being presented with his 'mom' award by Mark Preddey on a cold day in Bowral. |
Official Scorer: Howard Watts & Co
Scoreboard: John Wulff snr.
Summary: GBTCC team mate Nigel Mills joined me as we were presented with our Bradman Foundation kit and to say it was an honour to represent the home side select XI on this oval, the home of Sir Donald Bradman, would be something of an understatement.
In fairness to the ATCC, the class of the opposition was such that they were never going to win this fixture even if they had scored a further 50 runs. The youngsters who played were again outstanding cricketers and wicketkeeper batsman Owen Chivers deservedly won the MOM award for his contribution with bat and gloves.
Micahel Campbell-Jones played a fine innings as did new boy Darren Van der Hoff who is yet another fine player unearthed by the Wombats. It was fantastic to see Chris Wills walk to the crease and he did not disappoint with a circumspect 28 before falling to the guile of young leg spinner Will Norrie. That Chris is playing cricket again to a very high standard following his second lung transplant earlier this year is nothing short of miraculous and I have to admit to wiping a tear away when I met up with him again in Bowral on the eve of the match out of sheer admiration for a fellow heart transplant recipient (and more).
That I was able to bowl a maiden over to him will comfort me in the winter months at home but I shall remember this match in my old age as the day I got 'revenge' on my mate Muzza. Murray had batted very well for his 21 and when I knocked his middle stump out in my last over I could (probably should) have hung up my boots there and then.
On a more serious note, the Bradman Foundation and everyone connected with the ground and museum at Bowral are wonderful bunch of people who are promoting cricket all over the world and helping so many people to drink in the history of the game.
The Bradman museum is home to an exhibition of Baggy Greens from a galaxy of Australian Test players past and present and the ATCC are to be honoured by having their own version of the Baggy Green permanently displayed there too. All players of the Australian Transplant Cricket Club should be very proud of what they have accomplished and treasure their personal Baggy Green as if it were gold dust.
Note: The Bradman Pavilion was officially dedicated to the Trust and opened by Sir Donald and Lady Bradman on the 14th October 1989, which just happens to be the date of our wedding anniversary. Mrs Boggy and I celebrated 30 years of marriage the day following this match with a dinner cruise on Sydney Harbour. We wouldn't have wanted to be anywhere else. Thanks for having us.
