Saturday 24th September

A glorious failure.   After taking 52 shots for the fist 10 holes I covered the last 8 in only 32, giving me a gross score of 84 and a net 73.

Next week sees the start of the 'TOGS' winter league, our fourth.   All details current and past can be found on the 'TOGS' page(s).

Wednesday 21st  Thursday 22nd  & Friday 23rd September

I should like to thank all of my playing partners over the last few days for contributing so handsomely to the Boggy Trust Fund.   Unusually, I have been making collections from people who would normally expect to be on the receiving end of such largesse.

Tomorrow is the final medal of the season, playing from the white tees, and is therefore the last chance to reduce my handicap which is currently at 11.1 - oh dear.

Sunday 19th September
Chairman's Prize

An interesting format for today's competition -  Teams of four playing Texas Scramble using 1/10th of the total handicaps.   All players must have a minimum of three drives to count.   I am predicting a score of 60 or under to win.

My playing partners were Iris (17hcp) and John Hudspeth  (18) also Val Coulson (19) making our playing handicap 6.7.     We shot a gross 72 for a very creditable 65.3.   The best scorecard I could find as I was leaving the club was a 58.8, so we performed very well.

If I tell you that John Hudspeth is 80 years young and the two ladies were not in the first flush of youth either,  you will appreciate what a good score we posted.   I don't suppose they will ever read this but if they do, thank you.

Saturday 18th September

The big debate was whether people should be allowed to put 4 entries on the 'Bonus ball' draw in a rollover  week when they weren't on the previous week.   As someone who pays his £1 every week and am denied a chance to win when the payout is double, I think it a bit of sharp practice.

May I suggest that the next time the draw is a rollover, and therefore the first prize is £60, that the unnamed person who took the four numbers simply buys all 49 numbers.   He is certain to make a profit of £11 that way!   Better still, wait until it is a triple week and do the same and he is guaranteed to win £41.   That will never happen of course because the 'rollover' card is always full with people putting 4 numbers on!

No competition this week but I played with Archie and Bill Fletcher.   As it happens Bill won the pot, which we decided was for 'TOGS' only as there were a few unknown faces this week.   We need to decide officially what the policy is regarding mates in the field when it comes to the pot.

Do we always receive a pound from them when they play? if so we should let them win.   If they only put in when they have a chance to win then they should be excluded.   It cannot happen in a couple of weeks anyway because our 'TOGS' winter league will be under way.   Food for thought over the winter months perhaps, along with the practice of proxy votes at the AGM!

Wednesday 15th September

On a particularly windy day I met up with Brian Liddle and Le Frenchman and was delighted to take their small change as I came back from a 4 point deficit to win by 3.

For a change we played the 'six point game' which gives 4 points to the winner of a hole and 2 to the player who came second.    It could be 4:1:1 , 3:3 or indeed 2:2:2 whatever happens 6 points are divvied up at each hole between the protagonists.   It made for a pleasant change and as ever I enjoyed the game.

Monday 12th September

I pulled out of my golf game today so that I could watch England win The Ashes - and they did.

Congratulations to Daz Ridley who beat fellow 'TOGS' player Willy Smith in the final of The Irvine Cup, which is the singles knockout trophy at Tynemouth Golf Club, by 1 up.

All the ''TOGS' are proud of you boys - well done.

Saturday 10th September
Bogey Competition

On another awful day and despite playing in damp gear, I enjoyed my round of golf in the company of Duncan McCree and Alan Higginbottom.

I ended up on  -5, the same as Duncan.     Big Al recorded a +1 which is excellent golf in the conditions.   It was good enough to take the pot amongst The 'TOGS'.

We held our AGM in the clubhouse following the golf.   Rule changes and new stuff is on the 'TOGS' page.

Friday 9th September

Captain's Picnic @ Bishop Auckland Golf  Cub

Despite appalling weather and the competition reduced to nine holes we all had a great day out on a golf course that we want to revisit on a warm summers day.   We do have them occasionally,  remeber?

Wednesday 7th September

Six of us played a stableford competition (3/4 hcp) and teed off at 3.15pm because the tee was booked by the Tynemouth Seniors Open.   Archie won the front nine and the match with 19 +15 = 34 points and I salvaged a scone with 16 +15 for 21 points, giving me the back nine.

I rushed home at 7.15pm to watch England attempt to beat Northern Ireland in a World Cup qualifier without the aid if a safety net.   Unfortunately England lost 1-0 and were hopeless.

Monday 5th September

Le Frenchman and I took the cakes from Archie and Brian Liddle by winning 2up.

For some really interesting golf news check out my 'News Diary' page, today's date.   What do you reckon?   Predictions needed in 'Guest Book'.

Saturday 3rd September
the Forces Tankard
4 ball aggregate stableford comp

Me & Le Frenchman + Tony Sarginson & John Raffle

It's refreshing to know that someone else has a memory which is as poor as mine.   My French friend had us double booked for today's competition but fortunately there were two golfers waiting at the start looking for a pair to play with.  So we went off with Raff and well known bon viveur Tony Sarginson as 'planned'.

Tony and Raff had a combined score at the halfway mark of 41 points but could not sustain the pace.   They finished with a respectable 70 points and beat me and Mr Memory by 4.

Good question:    Who played Mr Memory in the 39 Steps?

Message to 'TOGS'

  1.  Remember we are having our AGM next Saturday following the golf.

  2.  We have a cricket match scheduled for next Sunday, are you playing?

Friday 2nd September

I enjoyed a rare round of golf with another left hander today in the form of Mickey Cox.   It was a pleasure to relieve him of some loose change, but most importantly I only dropped 1 shot on the back nine, which is a good sign.   A little late in the season but nonetheless welcome.
