My best ever round of golf, played Saturday 8th October 2005 - card of
the course.
Saturday 29th October I played with Eddy Stothert, Doug Walker and Willy Smith in today's competition and have to say that the greens have undergone a metamorphosis since I wrote about them just two weeks ago. Chatting with Oor Willy as we went round we wondered what, if anything, anybody could complain about as we got stuck into our sticky bun and sipped from the club's best China in the after match post mortem. Little did we suspect that there would be a disqualification of a player who thought he had scored a winning 42 points. Unfortunately for Mike Potts, he had not entered the club medal as we had all agreed at the AGM (for the past 2 years). The simple reason being that the winner should be first among equals and no advantage can be gained by one player over the rest of the field. Mike's handicap is cut by 2 shots in accordance with our scoring system but his score cannot be recorded in the league table because of his disqualification. For more excitement, don't forget to tune in next week for episode 5 of the 'TOGS'.
Wednesday 26th October 42 points: Eddy Stothert (11 / 9) / John Raffle (16 /14)
38 points: Vic Hillier If we played any slower it would have been dark. I am sick and tired of playing behind discourteous golfers who just flout the rules, disregard etiquette and spoil it for everyone. To take 4 hours for a round of golf on a quiet Wednesday afternoon is simply not acceptable. If a fourball is holding up a two ball why can they not just move over? A two ball has no right to decline the offer to 'play through' if they in turn hold up the group(s) behind, two threeballs as it happens, which is what happened today. To make matters worse it started raining at the 16th tee and we got wet whilst the culprits up ahead were safely in the clubhouse drinking tea and talking about how well (sic) they had played. Apart from that I really enjoyed the game. I would suggest that all 'WAGS' and potential 'WAGS' read our rules which are posted on the dedicated 'WAGS' page. The league tables for our first two seasons are also posted on pages below the 'WAGS', check it out chaps and see for yourself. Wednesday 19th October First game of a new 'WAGS' winter season was cancelled because 75% of the players are either on holiday or working. It could be that we are wasting our time, we shall see. The balls went up and came down partnering me with a Frenchman with a dodgy accent against Vic Hillier and Oor Willy. C'est la magnifiqué. We won 6 &4. Monday 17th October Playing with Le Frenchman who has recently had a lesson from our pro to tweak his swing, I took the pot of tea quite easily. Once my fellow leftie has mastered the changes to his grip, stance, clubs, clothes, haircut and most especially his accent he will again become a foe to fear. Saturday 15th October Never a dull moment after a game with the 'TOGS'. We have a set of rules that have been agreed at the AGM on 10th September 2005. We have covered most things (we think) that have been causing concern. For example: Time for handing cards in: Time the draw is made: Time for first game to tee off: How many sugars Daz takes in his cuppa: Score 36, lose a shot: Score 39+ lose a shot according to the tariff: Winner cut by 2; Runner up cut by 1 etc etc... The rules we changed and the existing rules are all posted below the league table on the 'TOGS' page. I don't know what all the fuss is about. By the way Daz takes 2 sugars!! I am just happy to be here! Thursday 13th October Halved with Raff Wednesday 12th October Following our game of golf today we have decided to reform the 'WAGS', Wednesday Afternoon Golf Squad, and will start next week. As a result of holidays and other commitments through the week, work springs to mind, we have got 7 definite who can play regularly, we may yet get a couple more. Slightly different in format to the 'TOGS' the best 5 scores will count and the winner each week will be cut 1 shot. Anyone scoring more than 39 points or more will also be cut by 1 shot. The first group will tee off at 11.30am each week.
Monday 10th October Dave Archbold returned from his trip to Ireland in inspired form, either that or he needed the money badly. He wiped the floor with me and le Frenchman in a round which include three birdies. Thankfully, he leaves for a month in Florida so that gives us all chance to save up for his return.
Update re Saturday -
Saturday 8th October Partnering Alan Higginbottom and playing off 3/4 handicap we scored a very competitive 45 points. It remains to be seen if anyone has bettered this score. I think a score of 47 was possible today, but we shall see. When I wrote my stuff (below) on Thursday little did I expect to come out and shoot a gross 72 giving me a personal total of 44 points in the 'TOGS', but I did. My 'TOGS' handicap is now 6 and I have 24 weeks to see if I can score 4 x 34 or 35 to reach a total of 216+. Thursday 6th October Playing from these forward winter tee boxes on calm days like today lull me into thinking I am a good golfer. The stroke index is considerably reduced and my game is obviously flattered by possibly 4 or 5 shots making sub 80 scores normal. The higher (than me) handicap lads will definitely be favourite in both the 'TOGS' and the 'WAGS' as they too can reach greens in regulation from these forward tees. My partners today were John Raffle and Brian Liddle and we were joined by a man carrying a bag of onions at the 9th. Monday 3rd October Playing in very pleasant autumnal conditions from the forward winter tees the game seemed remarkably easy today. My playing partner was Gordon Smith and we had a very tight match which was only resolved at the 18th, which I birdied, to win by 1 up. Some of the greens resembled scrub land and the newly opened winter 9th looked as if a five a side game had just finished. As for the tee box at the 10th (winter only) how come it looks like a vegetable patch already? It is the first time anyone has been on it since last March! The members may have their expectations set high, but sadly the greenkeeper(s) have the blades set low! Saturday 1st October The 'TOGS' are up and running - check it out.
