Every time I tee it up whether in a medal or a friendly I record what happened to me and my partners. Invariably there is a talking point or an incident which merits a few lines. If the game passes without a hitch I will make something up anyway. I make no apology to my playing partners as I call it as I see it. FORE !!
Be warned, there is to be no catering on Mondays and Wednesdays during the winter. I am seriously thinking of bringing a kettle and leaving it in my locker. I can then boil my own water instead of having to fart about with a machine for 55p in the lounge. I am also considering bringing in some buttered scones with jam. As for polystyrene cups...........I pay £535 subs! Monday 30th January The 'anonymous' Mr Archbold and Le Hunt were my eventual partners today. We only teed off at 12.30 when the frost had lifted, but it was beautifully sunny and quite warm once we became acclimatised. Le Frenchman had been on the practice range (unknown to me) for half an hour before we started and it proved dividends as he won the front, back and match. he completed a fine performance with a forty foot birdie on the last. Normally this would have been good enough to win the tea and scones but as you will probably gather from the gloom and doom in my 'Guest Book', these facilities are unavailable to half the playing paying golfers midweek.
Saturday 28th January Playing gooseberry alongside Oor Willy and Duncan, who were playing their TOGS quarter final knockout, I felt my game approaching something like it ought to be...nearly. Green shoots and all that.
I have to compliment Oor Willy on a magnificent round of golf which not only
yielded 37 TOGS points (playing off 5) but also saw him defeat Duncan 5&4.
No shame there Dunc, you played OK.
Wednesday 25th January 1st - Eddy Stothert (7 / 6) = 36 points
34 points: Ken Oliver
Eddy improved his score by a massive 14 points and played really well in
difficult conditions. Ken continues
his much improved form and added 7 more points to his total and my touch is
slowly returning as I put another 3 points on the board.
With 9 weeks left things are getting closer but at this point Vic looks home
and dry with his 186. Monday 23rd January
Playing very well in a fourball match with Ken Oliver against Archy and Brian Liddle, we won at the 16th. I noticed a strange thing though coming up the 6th, as I was slightly off line with my drive. Behind a tree there was what looked like a rock. It was emitting a strange noise and an odd looking guy with a fur hat was sneaking away in the school field with what looked like an earpiece and hand held device resembling a walkie talkie. He was mumbling away but I could not make out a word he was saying. Thinking no more about it I watched the 6 O'clock news and the main story was about a suspect rock in Russia and Britain accused of spying. Strange days indeed. Even stranger was the scenario of having to fill a polystyrene cup with 55p worth of hot water and making my own cup of tea. Sandwiches were on sale behind the bar for the completely ridiculous price of £2.25 which included an obligatory packet of crisps. It just so happens I don't like crisps as they are junk food of the worst kind. If I wanted a sarnie I was told I must also pay for the 'free' crisps.
Is it just me? Or is someone extracting the urine?
Saturday 21st January Playing in the company of Bill Fletcher and Doug Walker I enjoyed my return to TOGS action, but could only improve my miserable total by a measly 2 points. If I can join the '200 club' I will be happy with my winter's work. Being cut 5 shots after only two weeks is proving a difficult handicap when not playing my best. I should like to compliment Doug on his smart appearance today with a very snappy line in co-ordinated attire which belies his 69 years. Young William Fletcher was, as always very smart too. Thanks gents, I was just happy to be there!
Wednesday 18th January I was 'awol' again this week but was not deducted any shots despite an attempted coup in my absence. Don't forget I write this stuff! I am definitely playing next week. 1st - Brian Liddle (18 /17) = 37 points
33 points: Le Frenchman Ex Lincoln City footballer Brian Liddle must have played outstanding golf because his score is so much better than the rest of the small but quality field. Brian has now lost 5 of the strokes he started out with so any guests will have to lose the same amount if they turn up and want to join in.. Well done Brian.
Wednesday 11th January 1st - Ken Oliver (24 /23) & Les Napier (guest 12) = 31 points
29 points: Dave Archbold / Graham Marsh Well done Ollie! The rest of us struggled away in the gale force wind, but to no avail. Le Frenchman notched the only birdie of the day with his putt on the 18th but apart from that, not a lot can be said. I will be back next Wednesday. Monday 9th January
Playing with Archie today against the double leftie combo of Le Frenchman and Ken Oliver we came up smelling of tea and scones. Very enjoyable round of golf to warm the limbs on a bitterly cold afternoon. The Flogs - Dave and Kim could not make any improvement this weekend on their already formidable totals. Our transatlantic TOG informs me that the slow play in Florida is much worse than at Tynemouth. Their round yesterday took 5 hours 10 minutes which is bad enough. When you consider that they were in buggies it is outrageous. Saturday 7th January Week 15 of the TOGS produced a field of 14 which is very good. There was also a club betterball stableford competition today and the best score amongst us was that of Duncan and Alan Higg with 42 points which is very reasonable off 3/4.
I partnered Daz and we had 41 points as did Tony Sarginson / Archie and
the Rosco / Willy pairing.
Thursday 5th January In an unexpected but very enjoyable round of golf with the Frenchman I found something that resembled my game. Let's hope I can keep hold of it for the 'TOGS' this coming Saturday where I am desperately in need of a score in the mid thirties.
Wednesday 4th January It seems I can't leave these lads alone without another 'incident'. I was missing today but my tic-tac man has sent the following account of today's play and scores, which were excellent. Oh what fun. Old and new handicaps in brackets 1st - Le Hunt (12 / 10) & Vic Hillier (12 /10) = 40 points
36 points: Malcolm Dawson - upgraded to 40
points off 21 cut to 17 Our two 12 handicappers, Vic et L'homme de Francais shared the podium and are cut to 10. Vic also romps to the top of the leaderboard and is currently 5 points clear of a bvery steady Dave Archbold. Raff and Brian both posted good solid scores and the table is starting to look very interesting.
Before play Daz was the leader but as he decided to walk off the course
rather than play behind a snail and a tortoise. Our rule re
'walk offs' is applied for the first time ever and Daz is cut to 1 handicap.
Even though I wasn't there today he has my sympathy because the speed of
play on Wednesday's of late has been abysmal. Nevertheless a
penalty is rightly imposed because we do not want players to walk off unless
feeling unwell or bad weather as a matter of courtesy to their playing
partners. Monday 2nd January 2006 My first game in a week with my mates and once again I was dreadful. I only scored 29 points and was at least 6 points off the pace and 10 behind Rosco who won the jammie dodgers. There is one consolation to be had, I hope, things can only get better. |
