GREAT BRITAIN TRANSPLANT CRICKET CLUB
David Hookes Memorial Trophy Series
GBTCC v Australia
Percy Main Cricket Club: 9th
- 10th July 2006
2 Day Game - Minimum of 90 overs per day.
The Australians had arrived safely in England and following an action packed week in London had eventually arrived in my beloved north east of England. Some were staying in Newcastle hotels but the majority of players and their wives would enjoy the delights of Whitley Bay and Tynemouth for the next seven days. I think they were pleasantly surprised by the beauty of the coast in my little corner of the world, even if the surf in Tynemouth was non existent during their stay.
The weather was set fair after some overnight rain, but the wicket had been covered and whoever won the toss would have the advantage. Australia won the toss and elected to bat:-

The Australians used up 75 overs grinding out a total of 221 and kept us in the field for the best part of a hot day. They set their stall out very clearly and were not going to give up the trophy easily. Nick Harris, Phil Walker and Michael Campbell-Jones all batted very well. Chris Wills was run out brilliantly by Ian Hillier without scoring and we would pay dearly for this as the series progressed.
Phil posted the highest score so far (78) in the competition. This was simply an early indication of what was to come in this record breaking series. Alistair Hedderwick took the first 'five for' on English soil and all the other bowlers bowled very tidily.
For the record:
Nick Harris c Alex Chillcott b Matt Coombes was the first wicket to fall in
England.

| Michael Campbell-Jones | 11 | 2 | ?? | 1 |
| Phil Walker | 3.3 | 0 | 5 | 3 |
Chris Wills made amends for his duck by bagging a six wicket haul, another first. Dave Parker scored the first fifty (67) by an Englishman and the middle order provided him with good support. Alex Chillcott provided a glimpse of his power but was brilliantly caught by super sub Damian Lentell on the boundary. A deficit of 30 on first innings. Will the Aussies go for the win?
ATCC - 2nd Innings
| Nick Harris | c&b | b Marsh | 41 |
| Graham Lentell | b Witham | 0 | |
| Phil Walker | b Witham | 0 | |
| Chris Wills | lbw | b Witham | 60 |

| Pete Pirus | c Rice | b Marsh | 6 |
| Murray Rose | not out | 17 | |
| Extras | 17 | ||
| Total | 5 wickets declared, 44.5 overs | 175 | |
Nick Pomone fielded as sub in both innings.
Bowling:
| Bowler | Overs | Maidens | Runs | Wickets |
| Brian Witham | 15 | 3 | 58 | 3 |
| Matt Coombs | 9 | 3 | 18 | 1 |
| Mike Rice | 3 | 0 | 17 | 0 |
| Graham Marsh | 13.5 | 3 | 45 | 4 |
| Alistair Hedderwick | 3 | 0 | 10 | 0 |
| Alex Chillcott | 1 | 0 | 4 | 0 |
Nick and Chris both batted with power and the scoring rate was an improvement on the first innings, but inexplicably the tail used up a lot of overs with no apparent urgency.
I took my fourth wicket of the innings and the declaration eventually came but there were only 22 overs of the match remaining. Surely a draw was the only result?
GBTCC - 2nd Innings

| Alex Chillcott | c Rose | b Wills | 5 |

| Phil Walker | 3 | 1 | 10 | 0 |
| Nick Harris | 1 | 0 | 7 | 0 |
| Robbie Proctor | 3 | 0 | 18 | 0 |
Chris Wills took his match figures to a magnificent 10 - 78, another first in the competition's short history. Dave Parker, coming in lower down the order, passed 100 runs for the match and he and Alistair saw out the draw with ease.

Summary:
|
The Australians were in a position to force the pace and go for a victory but seemed to settle for a draw from a long way out.
|
Would this tactic backfire on them later in the series? I wonder.
|
The players making their debuts in the competition had
already shown their hand and the best was definitely yet to come.
|
Both sets of players enjoyed the World Cup Final on the Sunday evening in the clubhouse of PMCC.
|
France lost to Italy in a penalty shoot out.
|
The 'albatross pie' and mushy peas, a traditional Geordie delicacy, were enjoyed by yours truly, if not by all the Aussies. |
