GREAT BRITAIN TRANSPLANT CRICKET CLUB

David Hookes Memorial Trophy Series

 GBTCC v Australia

Jesmond  - 12th July 2006
1 Day Game - 45 overs per innings

For the first time in the competition the one day games would count towards the outcome of the David Hookes Memorial Trophy.   Test matches would be worth two points and the ODI's one point each.   Thus every game played is now of great importance.

The teams went into this game level after the drawn Test at Percy Main.   Once again the weather was hot and sunny and the wicket was perfect with a very fast outfield on this county cricket standard ground.   The forecast however was for rain later in the day.

Australia won the toss and elected to bat:

ATCC Innings

Phil Walker   b Coombs 15
Chris Wills c Mitchell b Rice 17
Graham Lentell c Parker b Rice 12
Michael Campbell-Jones c Chillcott b Mitchell 54
John Wulff   c&b Chillcott 25

Murray Rose c Parker b Mills 0
Bill Trelease   b Chillcott 0
Howard Watts not out   0
    Extras 38

Total 44.2 overs 264

Graeme Appleby and Martin Graham also fielded.

Bowling:

Bowler Overs Maidens Runs Wickets

Matt Coombs 7.2 2 42 1
Mike Rice 7 1 45 2
Graham Marsh 8.4 0 60 0
Alistair Hedderwick 7 1 36 0
Colin Mitchell 3 0 25 1
Nigel Mills 6.2 1 29 2
Alex Chillcott 5 2 12 4

Nick Harris (98) made the highest score in the series so far and batted powerfully until he was out just two runs short of what would have been the first hundred.   He was backed up well by a fifty from MCJ.  The Aussies total was pegged back by the bowling and wickets of Nigel Mills and Alex Chillcott otherwise they would have been out of sight.   264 was still a massive score and GBTCC would have to bat very well to win.

Apart from Nigel Mills (54) and some late slogged runs from Ian Hillier and Steve Jackson GBTCC were woefully short.

The weather nearly came to GB's rescue but just in the nick of time the Aussie skipper brought back his best bowler Chris Wills.   Chris knocked Steve Jackson's middle stump out of the ground with his first ball and cleaned up the tail.   We were just sipping on our after match lemonades when the rain started.

Result: Australia won by 81 runs       Series:   GBTCC  0 - 1 ATCC

Men of the Match: Nigel Mills (GBTCC)  / Nick Harris (Australia)

Summary:

bullet

A record score both for the team and skipper (Nick Harris) gave Australia the first win in the series and installed them as favourites to retain the trophy.

bullet

Chris Wills has already taken 15 wickets in the series.   I guess there are more to come.

bullet

Michael Campbell-Jones scored his second fifty of the series.

bullet

Nigel Mills had a fine all round game with runs and wickets and Alex Chillcott gave another (brief) glimpse of his batting prowess.

bullet

Ian Hillier (*) lived up to his not out reputation and batted very well down the order.

bullet

It is vital that GBTCC win the next game.

bullet

We need Colin to win the toss and bat because the next venue, Tynemouth, is a big fast scoring ground full of runs.
