Summary: I was honoured to be asked to captain the Dr Howard Watts XI and a fine eclectic bunch of cricketers was assembled on my behalf at great expense. The mixture of youth and elder statesmen worked very well. We older chaps were mesmerised by the youngsters speed and agility in the field and it made life very simple for us. That the young guns were also fine bowlers and batsmen helped too.
Apart from our victory the highlight of the match was definitely the catch made by Michael Campbell-Jones. If anyone needed proof that organ donation works, the sight of MCJ bombing round the field to take a tumbling catch was something to behold. Athleticism of the highest order by the man from Bowral.
Sean Henderson proved to be a class act with the bat and fortunately for us had to retire when in full flow. Another outstanding newcomer for the ATCC was the leg spinner from Melbourne, Pete MacCuspie. His figures of 3 -21 and steady batting make him a formidable opponent.
The committee and staff of Bayswater Cricket Club deserve full praise for the wicket they prepared and the magnificent hospitality by way of the post match barbeque which was much appreciated by all players and supporters alike.
It goes without saying, but I will anyway, that without Howard Watts and his wife Judy putting in lots of hard work and effort over the past few months none of this would have been possible. Hats off to you Howard, you are a gentleman. Thank you.
