Man of the Series

Each captain selected a player from the opposition to receive the accolade at the post tour dinner.

ATCC - Chris Wills.

Chris was an automatic choice having scored 419 runs and claiming 25 wickets for the Australians in the series.    He has set the bench mark for others to follow in what we hope will be a long running biennial series.

As Fred Truman remarked when asked the question if he thought his 300 wickets in Test cricket would ever be beaten, "I don't know, but if it is someone will be bloody tired".   Likewise, if a player overhauls these numbers in the David Hookes Memorial series.

Chris, on accepting the award was extremely humble and gave much of the credit to his lovely wife Anita who had accompanied him on the trip.

GBTCC - Nigel Mills

Nigel may not have taken the most wickets nor scored the most runs but he played in every game and his overall contribution was immense.    He saved his best performances for when they were  needed most and was a key player in securing the series victory.

His batting was very secure coming in at number three and when this modest man accepted the skipper's invitation to 'have a go at some bowling' he always chipped in with his fair share of wickets.

Nigel Mills and Chris Wills

As that well known saying goes, "There are lies, damned lies and statistics."  So make what you will of the above information.   I have tried to be accurate but if you spot a mistake or two please let me know and I shall correct it ASAP.   I was getting a bit cross eyed by the time I had finished.

On a personal note:   I was dismissed six times in the series and it was my great pleasure to lose my wicket on each occasion to that magnificent cricketing Wombat - Chris Wills.

"I was just happy to be there!"      I bet Chris was happy that I was there too.

Brief Summary of The 2006 Tour

When the idea of a tour by the Australian Transplant Cricket Club to defend the David Hookes Memorial Shield was just that, an idea, it was impossible to imagine how successful it would be, indeed at times I thought it would never happen.

The following companies / organisations provided some much needed funds or kit and I would like to acknowledge that in these notes:

bullet

The Mailbox Company

bullet

The Northumberland Association of Clubs for Young People

bullet

The Freeman Heart & Lung Transplant Association

bullet

UK Transplant

bullet

Gray Nicholls

The planning, organisation and finance to stage the Tour was a lot of hard work and I would like to thank Colin Mitchell (Hon sec) and Alistair Hedderwick (Chairman) for all of their patience, diligence, commitment and time over these past 12 months.   At one point I think our 'inboxes' consisted of nothing but transplant cricket mail.

Equally, from an Australian viewpoint it must have been very difficult too.   Jeff Sewell the Chairman of ATCC worked tirelessly in assembling his troops and I know he would like me to thank on his behalf Carol Ang, from Transplant Australia, who was the link between the players, TA, Jeff and GBTCC.

There is a fourth person who deserves a lot of credit in the success of the Tour too.   John Soldan, Vice President of Dulwich Cricket Club.   The young David Hookes played his cricket in England before he became a Test cricketer and his chosen club was Dulwich CC.   John very kindly organised the events in London for the touring Aussies and they enjoyed trips to the Houses of Parliament, The Oval and Lord's, where they enjoyed a net session in the indoor school.

John still keeps in touch with Robyn, David's widow and I know is going to tell her what a great success the Tour was.

The five grounds we played on, Percy Main CC, Jesmond, Tynemouth CC, Monkton Combe CC and Hinton Charterhouse CC were all beautifully prepared and complemented each other perfectly to give the Aussies a feel of an English cricket summer.

bullet

The hospitality we received at every ground made the cricket that much more enjoyable, we were treated as if we belonged and it was much appreciated.

bullet

The Test matches were staged at mine and Alistair's home grounds, namely Percy Main CC and Hinton Charterhouse CC and they did not let us down.

bullet

The wickets and outfields were magnificent and the teas were very special.

bullet

Carol (PMCC) and Maria (Hinton) certainly know how to please a hungry cricketer.

bullet

GBTCC presented both clubs with commemorative plaques in recognition of staging a Test Match and no doubt they will display said plaques for everyone to see.

bullet

The camaraderie between both sets of players and their wives was very special and I reckon there is a bond between us which each of us will never lose nor forget.

bullet

Nick Harris, the Aussie captain, can be proud of his players, accompanying families and supporters too.   The sportsmanship both on and off the field was appreciated by all.

bullet

The dinner on the last evening was a perfect way to round off a perfect Tour.

bullet

Normally at these type of events people are jockeying for position to see who sits next to whom.   Not on this occasion, everyone was jumbled up as if it were perfectly normal behaviour.

bullet

This of course is what friends do.

bullet

Colin Mitchell, our captain, made one of the funniest after dinner speeches I have had the pleasure of listening to and there is nothing I can write here which can add to that, so I won't even try.

bullet

Before the Tour began our Holy Grail was winning the David Hookes Memorial Shield, which of course we did.

bullet

Somehow it did not seem so important after locking horns with the Wombats for the best part of a fortnight and Murray Rose summed it up when he opined that, he thought he would be devastated if the Aussies were to lose the trophy, which they did, but he wasn't.

bullet

I agree Muz, both teams, and cricket, were the winners.

bullet

The David Hookes Memorial Shield is what brings us together and not what divides us.

bullet

The tour as a whole attracted a lot of very good publicity in the media and we should never forget that it is the promotion of the donor programme and the carrying of organ donor cards which  is what we are all trying to promote.

bullet

I think we did that and had some fun too.

bullet

I think I can definitely say "I was just happy to be there!

bullet

Mrs Boggy and I are already looking forward to revisiting Australia for a holiday in 2008 and enjoying a bit of cricket against the mighty Wombats.

bullet

I should like to thank Mrs Boggy for all of her support up to and during the Tour.   Without her help and sometimes sufferance it would not have been possible.

bullet

I am sure Alistair would like me to thank CWAG Lucy too.

bullet

To all of the Wombats, Thanks for the green baggy.   I shall treasure it forever.
