Wednesday 28th December
WAGS

Course closed because of snow.   What do you make of that Mr Rowntree?

Daz and Willy came first (countback) and second on Boxing Day with 39 points.

Monday 26th December

Three clubs and a putter is the traditional game on Boxing Day at Tynemouth Golf Club and there were ten of us playing.   enjoyed the company and the exercise but my golf, again, was woeful.

I shall try again on Wednesday with the WAGS.   Tee off at 11.30am

Saturday 24th December

Four hour rounds of golf should be outlawed!
Especially when you have had to wait to play every shot since the 6th hole and there are not many players on the course!

To say that because someone got a decent score, therefore has not been affected by the slow players, is a red herring.   It is the same flawed argument about the state of the greens in the summer, when the committee say that because there are good scores in a competition the greens must be OK.   When we can all clearly see that the greens are hopeless.

The new diary has been issued to all Tynemouth golfers and in there it clearly states:
Local rules - Any match which has lost a clear hole must invite the following match to go through.
That at least would be a start.

Golfing Etiquette -  Always play and and move on without delay, aiming to keep up with the group in front rather than staying just ahead of the group behind.   That would be nice too.

Merry Christmas to all golfers - even the slow ones.

Wednesday 21st December
WAGS

What a day for good scoring.   Daz went round in level par to score 40 points, go into first place and is now playing off a handicap of 2.   Eddy Stothert also bagged 40 points and is cut to 7hcp.

This was not enough to win the match because Brian Liddle also scored a fantastic 40 points and is cut to 18.   I believe this is Brian's first forty pointer for a couple of seasons and considering he is a sprightly 79 years young, the ex professional footballer can count himself a little unlucky in not winning outright.   He played for 'The Imps' - guess who?

Other notable scores were John Raffle and Vic Hillier with 38 and escaped a cut in hcp.   Likewise Archie and Ken Oliver with a pair of 35's.   Archie is poised nicely to jump from under the covers and go top of the leader board with another 33+ score.   Just like the 'TOGS' it is going to be very close at the end.

(Old / new handicaps in brackets)

1st - Daz Ridley (4/2):  Eddy Stothert (9/7):  Brian Liddle (22/18) = 40 points.

38 points:   John Raffle / Vic Hillier
35 points:   Ken Oliver / Dave Archbold
32 points:   Le Frenchman
28 points:   Willy Smith
26 points:   Graham Marsh

Monday 19th December

Some strange bloke who identified himself as Raff played with Archie, Le Frenchman, Ken Oliver and me.   As we all felt desperately sorry for Archie following his 'losing' performances of last week it was fitting that he should emerge triumphant today.

Ken Oliver won the back nine with a score of 17 points and he also scored the day's only birdie with a magnificent iron to the par three 17th, leaving a simple four footer for a two.   Nice one Ollie.

Saturday 17th December
The 'TOGS' - Week 12

Having played like a God all week I left the golf course today looking for the three wheels which had fallen off my wagon.      Things took a turn for the worst when I hit a five iron from the lateral water hazard at the 7th hole (I know it's a lateral hazard because it is marked by red stakes) and my club head detached itself from the shaft and travelled further than the ball.

Nevertheless I can honestly say, "I was just happy to be there!"   I am looking forward to teeing it up again next week on Christmas Eve.

Thursday 15h December

Played with Le Frenchman, the holidaying Rosco, Archy and Daz, who had to leave after the eighth hole.   Very enjoyable and had no problem buying the cakes.

Wednesday 14th December
WAGS

You may not believe what I am about to write, but here goes.

There were 10 of us playing in the 'WAGS' today.

To say Dave Archbold was a little unlucky not to win is a slight understatement.   He scored 19 on the front nine (not good enough).  He came back with an excellent 22 points (to win the back nine by 1 point)  making his total  41 points, which would normally take the cream cakes.   Unfortunately he came up against a superior being on the day who  scored 21 on the front and came back in 21 for a total of 42.

Yes, you've guessed it!   It was me again with a gross 74 (11hcp).   Sorry Archy!   Daz Ridley (5hcp) shot a gross 71 for 39 points, great stuff.

(Old / new handicaps in brackets)

1st - Graham Marsh (11/9) = 42 points:  2nd -Dave Archbold(13/12) = 41 points.

39 points:   Daz Ridley (5 / 4)
36 points:   Vic Hillier
32 points:   Bill Fletcher / Ken Oliver / Colin Stevenson
31 points:   Brian Liddle
28 points:   Le Hunt
27 points:   Alan Ross

Young Victor and I head the rest.   We have both posted 5 scores and can now start improving on the worst, we hope.   A glance at the table will show Archy sneaking into a fantastic position from three completed rounds.   Is he playing undercover?   Daz is looking very good too!

Monday 12th December

There were seven of us today and we split into a three and a fourball playing stableford off full handicap.

To say Dave Archbold was a little unlucky not to win is a slight understatement.   He scored 23 on the front nine but could only manage a half and came back with a creditable 17 points for a total of 40, which would normally take the cream cakes.   Unfortunately he came up against a superior being on the day who also scored 23 on the front, but came back in 19 for a total of 42.

I am delighted to report that your correspondent was the victor.   I shot a gross 75 which was very pleasing.   The cream cakes were delicious.

Saturday 10th December
Week 11 - 'TOGS'

Another tough day for scoring, but at least I managed to add 5 more to my total leaving me dawdling in the nineties behind seven members of the '200 Club'.   Playing off 6, I can only chip away each week and try to get  my five worst  scores into the thirties which will give me an outside chance of getting somewhere near the top of the table.  I reckon the present total of 209 which is leading is still just within range of me and about six others.

We shall see!

Wednesday 7th December
WAGS
(Figures in brackets are the waggled handicaps)

1st - Ken Oliver (25 / 24) & Dave Archbold (14 /13) = 36 points

30 points:   Graham Marsh
27 points:   Brian Liddle / Eddy Stothert
26 points:   Vic Hillier

Nice to see Ken Oliver sharing the spoils with Archie, they both scored 36 on what appeared to be an easy scoring day but the state of the course proved otherwise.   Ken's front nine score of 22 points was a doddle and he possibly should have scored more.

A glance at the league table will show that I am top and Vic is second.   Do not be fooled by this.    We have both played four scoring rounds, at least one more than the rest of the field.

Tuesday 6th December

During my workout at the gym this morning I went through yesterday's round in my head, as you do, and was quite surprised by my losing score:

Out: 6:4:3:4:5:4:7:4:3 = 40                      Red = Loss:   Blue = Half:   Yellow = Win
In:    4:4:7:5:4:4:4:3:4 = 39                      White = Already lost!

                           Total =  79.                     ESS (6hcp) = 32 points

I repeat what I said yesterday - Well played Duncan!

Monday 5th December

Duncan McCree beat me 4&3 today to move serenely into the last 8 of the 'TOGS' knockout competition.   It is never nice to lose and I did not play too badly really.   Sometimes it is best to put one's hands up and bow to the superior man.   Duncan played superbly and even without the two shots I had to cede he would still have been the victor.   It is small consolation that his ESS was 41 points off 9hcp.   Which is very good.

Well done Dunc (honestly).

Sunday 4th December

Considering I was playing in my jim jams I did well to stay in contention until the 16th hole against two in form 'TOGS', Daz and Oor Willy, the winner.

I had the weekly update from our 'FLOGS' pairing of Kim and Dave Rowntree and the dreaded slow play curse struck in Florida this week, upsetting our two transatlantic competitors.   They tell me it took four and half hours to complete the round and that was in a buggy!

Kim scored 22  and Dave 29 points which did not improve their already impressive scores.
